Good Morning, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.
Today, I would like to introduce Julia Buckingham Edelmann from Buckingham Interior Design and the wonderful blog, Material Girls to discuss her Collection of Figurative Sculptural Pieces.
Kathryn: Why are you passionate about these pieces? What really spoke to you about them?
JBE:I love pieces that have a story, a richness to them. I am all about the “conversation piece”. My trademark aesthetic is “Modern-ique”® which combines the history of antique with the freshness of modern style. I selected these pieces because they range in period from late 19th century to mid century modern and represent my “Modern-ique” ®style.

Kathryn: Where and how do you use your collection? I.e. for display, only on holidays, for dining…
KBE: In this instance, I’ve used my figurative sculpture collection in a variety of places. You can see them throughout my Chicago showroom, on coffee tables, foyers, bedrooms and many more spaces in my clients’ homes as well. I feel like this type of object is very versatile and has become a signature of mine, therefore I try to use figurative sculptures wherever I need the perfect amount of “Modern-ique” ® flair!

Kathryn:What are your favorite sources for finding these pieces?
JBE: I love traveling the world looking for just the right pieces to fit in my clients’ homes and to bring to my showroom. I have found figurative sculptural pieces just about anywhere! One of my go to spots is the Brimfield Antique Show. Also, one of my all time favorite antique markets is Clingnancourt in Paris. My last visit was in January 2012, and I am counting the days until I can go back!

Kathryn: What is your advice for someone who might want to start a similar collection?
JBE: Anything can become a collection! The key to making a successful collection is choosing a type of object that you are passionate about and can see your interest transcending in time, not just something trendy. From teacups to dominoes to figurative sculpture, find something you love and keep an eye out for these objects wherever you go. The most wonderful feeling is when your eye falls upon the oh-so-perfect piece, that you just know will fit perfectly in your collection.

WOW – Something new to start collecting. Love it!
Sidebar ~ SO hoping you will consider having an Antique Shopping Trip here in NC like you do for Tobi’s Design Camp. Would love to do Cashier’s Design House & go shopping! Think it would be a sell out. Love your caramel cake recipe.
Junell,
Oh aren’t there so many possibilities for collecting! As to your “sidbar”, I am planning an antique shopping trip, but it will likely be in the Spring of 2013 due to my very heavy book event schedule this fall. The Cashier’s showhouse has ended, I actually did my move out today, which made me a bit sad! However, that would be a great idea for next August, to combine an antiquing trip with a side trip to the showhouse! Thanks for that idea and I will be updating about the spring trip on the blog. I am so glad you love the caramel cake recipe…it is everyone’s fav!!
Kathy
