Another reason that I love May is …
Last week we had a forecast that called for frost and immediately I had to cover my budding peonies. I have many old heirloom peony plants from my mother’s garden. As a child I so vividly remember the peonies in my grandmother’s garden. Their scent was heavenly and I was so fascinated by the layers and layers of petals. Peonies remain my favorite flower and I only wish that they would grow all summer in my little cottage garden!
I love peonies of every color , but my favorite are the lovely pale pinks. One of my favorites is of course “Sarah Bernhardt”. So many peony varieties and so little space in the garden at Chestnut Cottage! But I will squeeze in a peony at any given opportunity and I love the site www.hollingsworthpeonies.com. They have a great selection, especially of fragrant varieties, as well as heirloom plants. An heirloom variety is described as having been on the “peony market” for over 100 years. Some of my favorite fragrant peonies are these: Bridal Shower, Lavon, Madame de Verneville, My Love, and Mr. Ed. (Below)
And my favorite heirloom peonies are Lady Alexandra Duff and Mons Julls Elie and Festiva Maxima!
Peonies in my garden bring me immense joy and pleasure, as do cutting them for lovely arrangements. These should inspire everyone to plant peonies by the dozens!
If these lovely flowers make your heart sing as they do mine, stay tuned tomorrow for…MORE PEONIES!
