Thanksgiving at Chestnut Cottage is one of my favorite holidays. For many years,Wells and I have opened our home to family, friends, and “strays”, as we lovingly call new friends who may not have a place to celebrate this holiday. In my new book, The Collected Tabletop, I devote an entire chapter to this tradition.
We are so grateful for the blessings of a lovely home, delicious food, and special family and friends and love sharing our home. One of my favorite passages from the Bible is from Hebrews 13:2-
“be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unaware.” We should all govern our entertaining by this verse!
Our guest list usually adds up to at least 24 , and Chestnut Cottage’s rambling floor plan allows me to seat eight in our kitchen, eight in our gathering room, and some guests even eat in the master bedroom.
My extensive collection of antique flow blue allows each table to be set in a different flow blue dinnerware pattern and the real stars of the collection are two large turkey platters. Both are used to serve homemade turkey and dressing. Another favorite piece of flow blue , a fern stand, makes a great place for placing the meals wine offerings.
