To end our series of Ways with Antiques, I would like to talk about displaying your collections. As an avid collector, I am frequently ask by design clients …first of all what should I collect, and secondly, what is the most effective way to showcase a collection.
First of all, my initial advice, is to collect things that really appeal to you (what are you passionate about?!) and what might you actually use. Secondly, there are so many great ways to display your collections! Consider your space, furniture that you have, and places that will make your collections easy to use.
Walls, cupboard, tables, consoles, niches, and shelves all offer endless possibilities for display of your antique or vintage collections.
I suppose the place that comes to most people’s minds when thinking of displaying a collection is in a cupboard or a lovely piece of antique furniture.
Walls are another obvious place for displaying collections. Grouping your collection is very important to wall display and a bit of thought needs to be put into the design of the grouping. I most often lay the grouping out on the floor and arrange them and then make a drawing with correct space between before actually hanging on the wall. This certainly cuts down on potential mistakes!
A variety of tabletop displays can make even a small collection look stunning.
Shelves and Niches are yet another great way to display your collections.
Most importantly, display your collections where they will bring you the most pleasure and where they are in easy reach so that you can use them frequently!
