The colorful doors of Dublin are most fascinating! Legend reports two theories on these delightful, colorful doors. One theory (and my favorite) is that the women of Dublin were tired of their husbands going in the wrong doors after spending too much time in the local pubs…going up the wrong stairs, into the wrong bedroom and sleeping with the wrong woman…so they painted the doors different colors to help them distinguish between them. In that most men are color blind, I would imagine that this remedy might not have resolved the problem! Another theory is that after the death of Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, England ordered the citizens of Ireland (which were all still under British rule) to paint all of their doors black to mourn with the Queen. The Irish, being opposed to caving to such orders, immediately painted their doors as colorful and bright as possible, and the tradition has continued. Whatever the reason, the doors of Dublin are one of the most fun and entertaining aspects of traveling there. Here are some of the most lovely doors of Dublin I have found!
