As a gardener, my favorite time of the garden at Chestnut Cottage is Spring! But before those luscious peonies, delphiniums, and roses appear, there is the lovely winter garden. I love the scriptural quality of a garden in winter, particularly covered in frost or snow! I can just image my spring bulbs…warm deep in the ground…not about to show their fact in the bleak winter garden. January seems to be a time when I love to be curled up by the fire re-reading Beverly Nichol’s entertaining garden books. Recently I found a delightful little set of books on seasonal flowers. I pulled the one called Flowers of Winter and loved the inside cover sketches of the garden in winter. It is such fun to find these little treasures!
The garden can look spectacular even in the depths of winter, and especially under a shape-defining blanket of snow! And don’t forget that proper pruning is most evident in winter!
