“The Collected Library”: Books Reduced to Decor!

I am not a designer  swayed by “trends”, but there is one trend that I am glad to see go!  According to the Wall Street Journal’s Top Ten Interior Design Trends for 2014… “books reduced to décor” are OUT!  Thank goodness!!

I believe that anyone who truly loves books and loves to read  would never cover them in kraft paper or white paper or anything else for that matter. Ones  books are such a personal statement  and I feel that I can learn so much about a person when I see the books that they surround themselves with.  My friend Scot Meacham Wood was interviewed for this article and to quote Scot…”it’s a statement about not reading”! Dust jackets in matching colors, stacked into bookshelves on or tabletops or anywhere else show  that the books are not really there to be read and savored.

A collected library should have shelves and stacks full of lovely dust covers that give a glimpse into what the book has to offer. As an author, I know how much time and effort went into the cover of my book, The Collected Tabletop and I would hate to see it covered in white paper and buried away on a shelf with all other white books!

Or books should  have lovely old leather covers that give a true mellowness and age to a collected library.

You will appreciate that I have your book displayed beautifully in my living room with the edge torn off by my dog. I agree that books are beautiful and tell others who we are by what we have chosen to read. In my case, it tells others I’m a bit untidy and live with active dogs!!!

    Thanks,

    Kristen,
I love that the dog was chewing my book! Smart dog you have, and as one who loves dogs…there are no bad dogs!
