“What’s In Your Collection”: Shades of Blue, Jasperware!

From the deep indigo blues to medium tone, to a soft light blue, there is something for everyone who desires to collect jasperware!

Jasperware is perhaps the most celebrated accomplishment of legendary English potter Josiah Wedgwood.  Jasperware is a finely-grained stoneware developed in the 1770s and remains today perhaps one of the most distinctive ceramic wares ever to be created.  It is simply an unglazed white bisque which can ultimately be colored and decorated with raised images on the surface.  Most experts agree that jasperware was finally perfected around 1777 , after years and years of experimentation.  Clay was combined with barium sulphate for a slightly translucent effect which adapted to the stain of various colors.  Many pieces of jasperware are applied with classical images of Greco-Roman figures, which were highly stylish and marketable at the time jasperware came to the market.

Lastly, here are the darker tones…

If you are interested in a jasperware collection, I would recommend that you stick with one particular shade that you love to obtain maximum impact.  A variety of sizes and shapes also lends interest to the collection.

This exquisite jasperware tea set in dark blue has applied designs, including the British Royal Coat of Arms, the profile of King Edward VII with a crown over his head and the lettering ‘E VII R’ and is decorated also with garland of leaves and berries.  This set was produced to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII who was to have been crowned in 1937, but abdicated before the event!

Perhaps you are inspired to start a collection of blue jasperware or add to an already wonderful collection!
