What’s On Your Thanksgiving Platter?

The clock is ticking and we all better be getting everything lined up and organized for “Turkey Day”!

As you likely know by now, my Thanksgiving platters are blue and white! That should certainly come as no surprise. One of my big “Tommy Turkey” platters permanently hangs on the kitchen wall of Chestnut Cottage.

Each Thanksgiving I use both this platter and another, which are both antique flow blue.

I do love flow blue or any blue and white turkey platter and I am fascinated by the antique turkey platters that are still available on the antique market.

Now the question becomes…what’s on your Thanksgiving platter. Not only the color and pattern, but how do you “do your bird”!? I always buy a nice big organic turkey and inject him with a mixture of butter, olive oil , and spices before baking. I don’t stuff the turkey with my dressing, but cook it separately. I suppose one follows family traditions on these matters, and both of my grandmothers always baked the dressing separately. I would love to hear from you on how you cook your turkey and how you serve him up to family and friends! Several people I know deep fry their turkey and I hear they are very delicious that way. What is your turkey tradition?!? I know that all of my creative readers have some interesting ways to prepare turkey and I would love to hear from you! More “turkey talk” next week!

    Kathryn, thank you for asking. Your beautiful flow blue pieces are wonderful. Somehow, the blue gene passed right by me. However, I have a large brown Spode transferware platter with the regal bird on it. I fill that platter with the turkey adorned with roasted root vegetables. The star of the table is carefully pampered with butter and herbs and has a cavity properly filled with “stuffing” and trussed to within an inch of it’s life. Cannot wait for the day. However the best part, leftovers! And…. the next day tortilla soup made using turkey and turkey broth. Yumm!!

    We JUST bought our turkey…and, per tradition, it will go in the “smoker” for two hours (great color, too) and then in the oven to “finish off.” Always do the stuffing outside the bird…tastes better, to us, and it’s a “time saver!!” Everyone is always salivating when the bird emerges from the oven…franki

    Yum, I can’t wait for Thanksgiving dinner! We also bake our turkey and stuffing separately in my family. We use the extra turkey parts to make a homemade stock for our stuffing. Being a guy, the carving for me is key to a great turkey dinner. It’s important to let the cooked turkey sit for 30 minutes out of the oven, make a quick presentation, and then carve the bird back in kitchen.

    Luke,
    That is so true to let the turkey stand for about 30 minutes! My husband is the “carver”, I am always very busy getting everything else out of the oven and ready! I assign one of our guy friends to carve the ham while Wells is carving the turkey. I do love the dressing separately. My grandmother would hold back a bit of the raw dressing and after Thanksgiving, she would fry some little dressing patties in butter in her black cast iron pan. Yummy doesn’t even begin to describe the taste of that fried dressing! I confess that I also hold some back and do this same preparation. It’s great with a turkey and cranberry relish sandwich after the big day!

    Marlis,
    You too are making me very hungry describing your turkey! I love the idea of using the leftover turkey for the tortilla soup!! And I do love the brown transferware! I loved the game patterns I used in my book and often think I might use those at Thanksgiving, but the blue gene seems to always win out!
