This week I wanted to share my collection of trees at Chestnut Cottage. I am certain that putting up seven live Christmas trees must  be a sickness, however, I am glad that it is my affliction! Through many years, I have collected ornaments for my seven trees and each year it is a real joy to climb up in my attic and carefully bring down all of the ornaments for each  trees. (My husband doesn’t find quiet as much joy in this as I do, but he is very good natured about my “affliction”!)

Today at my office, I challenged my staff to come up with appropriate names for the seven trees and so we will start with “The Luck of the Irish” tree and “The Glitz and Glam Tree”. After several trips to Northern Ireland to my grandfather’s home, I decided to start a collection of Irish ornaments for an Irish tree. After one starts collecting for a “themed” tree, it is amazing all of the ornaments of that theme that one can find out in the world! And oh how I love this tree! I enjoy it being in my library, where I love to sit and read and relax in front of the fire.

It is fun to be in the library and my home office and enjoy two trees in a fairly small space. In the library I can look into the office and also see my “Glitz and Glam “tree. (We will get to that one later!)

And in the evening, I particularly love the Irish tree!

Over the years of collecting these Irish themed ornaments, I have fallen in love with these particular ones.

The “Glitz and Glam” tree ornaments are the ornaments of my first adult tree, so they have a special meaning. This year I decided to add a bit of blue and have enjoyed the result!

This tree has lots of “designer” type ornaments…chandeliers, tassels, crowns, etc., etc. Many years ago, a friend started me Waterford Crystal’s Twelve Days of Christmas ornaments. They seemed well suited on the tree with lots of gold and white. So this collection has become the focal point of the “Glitz and Glam” tree.

Last year, I received a gift from my good friend and business associate, Julia Molloy. In a special wooden box, I found three VERY special ornaments that had to be on this tree. They didn’t photograph very well, but they are three exquisite egg ornaments, handmade by Julia. One has a tiny angel in side…Julia is definitely one of my guardian angels; one has a tiny replica of The Collected Tabletop… Julia was a great help to me when doing the book; and the third is a tiny table setting! For me, trees and ornaments must have special meaning and memories and I will always treasure these “labor of love” ornaments from Julia!!

And speaking of Irish Waterford collections, my sweet mother-in-law Miriam Greeley started me a Waterford Nativity Collection before her death and I wanted to share that with you also, as it resides in the library, along with the “Luck of the Irish” tree.

The artists who make Waterford Crystal turned their skills to rendering the most luminous of Christmas scenes-the First Christmas. Sculpted with reverence and care, these pieces are so lovely because they are so simple. These are a collector’s treasure, a cherished possession, and an enduring testament to faith!
