Simple Pleasures: Summer Canning!

I was recently asked to give a presentation on Mind, Body, and Soul. At first I thought…why on earth would they ask me to do this program?!? After a bit of deliberation, I discovered what they really wanted me to speak on was…”finding your passions, feeding your soul”! So, I went to work on that and discovered that one of my  many passions  that feed my soul is…

This passion may sound strange to some, as it is indeed work, but canning is truly a very enjoyable endeavor for me! I started last week with a bushel of “Greasy Cut Short” green beans (my favorite !!). I love stringing and breaking beans on my front porch with a nice glass of wine! With that done, it is time to get out the pressure canner and start the work!

And then why not start a run of my Lime Pickles!

And then another run of pickles!

How lovely it is to gaze upon one’s handiwork!

Of course I love eating what I can…

But even more, I enjoy sharing my canned goods!

I love to share my freezer jam and pickles with my friend Annette Anderson. Her grandchildren love my strawberry jam in their plain Greek Yogurt! They refer to it as “pink magic”.  However, I don’t believe young William Hudson has much of a taste for my lime pickles!!

I do truly find canning to be one of life’s “Simple Pleasures”! I will be sharing other passions that fuel my soul after my presentation. Now I must line up one more bushel of greasy cut shorts to do before my knee surgery on August 26th!

  1. Kathryn, I admire your passion for canning. I’ve never canned, but when a friend brings me her homemade Sweet Hot Pickles, I’m an instant devotee. Wondering if you are having a knee replacement. I had two last year. Whatever knee procedure you have, I recommend that you make your physical therapist your new best friend. It will pay off in the long term. Prayers for your surgery and recovery process. Cherry Kay

That has to be the cutest grimace ever! Canning is a huge tradition in my family too. We are know for our salsa.

William is so expressive and cute! He loves dill pickles, but apparently does not like Lime Pickles! I love salsa! I bet your salsa is great!

Thanks so much Cherry Kay! I am not having a total replacement, just surgery for a severely torn meniscus. So hopefully I will have a quick recovery. I do pilates three times a week and will definitely be a very good physical therapist patient! I will definitely appreciate your prayers!
