Several months ago (before the scheduling of my knee surgery!), my husband planned a dinner party for 16 of his funeral service associates at Chestnut Cottage on last Sunday evening. So as the scripture in the Bible says…”I had to take up my bed and walk”! Saturday I started my preparations by arranging flowers on my little entrance courtyard. It was such a lovely morning at Chestnut Cottage, with the sun out and a gentle breeze. I had purchased some flowers at the wholesale market and planned to also use things from the garden.

The flowers were looking lovely, but definitely needed things from the Chestnut Cottage garden!

So out to the garden I went….

The garden additions brought lots of new texture and color to the arrangements!

One often thinks that there is just nothing in bloom in the garden, but the greens and flowers going to seed offer so much color and texture! Now for placing the flowers all around Chestnut Cottage…

And on tables…

The color and texture of these coleus from the garden add so much to this arrangement!

Now the tables are set…

One of my favorite antique linen tablecloths is this one I purchased in an antique shop in London. I just love the intricate designs…

I mixed both these vintage cobalt depression glass bowls, with my antique bowls by Moser. These intaglio bowls have a wonderful quatrefoil shape and saucer with blown finish pontils on the bottom.  And of course I mixed these with one of my favorite china patterns, Leighton Spray from Coalport!

I used both of the bowls for a little caprese salad.

With my knee issues, we decided that it would be prudent to engage our friends Page and Sid Trusdale to do the food for us. I gave Page my menu and recipes and they did a splendid job!

I wanted to use a lot of local products and fresh produce and my menu reflects that…

I am sorry to hear that knee surgery is required and I hope that you will do as well with it as I did. I had total knee replacement in April, 2016 and did wonderfully. I missed spring in Waynesville last year, but was able to enjoy walking and taking it all in this spring.

I know your guests enjoyed the beautiful table and local fare.

    Best Wishes, Donnie Mills

Thanks Donnie! I am doing well and thankfully didn’t have to have a knee replacement like you!
